Standing at the edge of the subway platform I hear the babble, blather and chitchat coming from the mouths of a hundred bodies pressed together behind me. The rattle, rumble and roar of the train pierces the still air and drowns the cacophony of words spoken in a dozen different languages. The gossip, gas and palaver comes to a halt as we hustle and jostle our way towards the open door and pile en masse into the sullen stunned silence of an empty car. A moment of peacefulness, then the prattle, twaddle and yakking starts its melodious hum as our bodies sway and swerve into each other as the train picks up speed transporting us to the next station.
