I took it upon myself to do anything my brothers could do and adopted an old Irish blessing as my mantra. “May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back”. I’m a girl. I can do anything. Does that sound to edgy, to sharply defined, to feminist? We are brought up to be discrete, inconspicuous, unnoticeable, unobtrusive. I travelled down many roads to reach the final destination and with my singular motivation, drive and urge I flouted all known conventions and became the first female to sail around the world single handed. I learned about my weaknesses and my strengths. It wasn’t an easy journey, it took me a long time to see my way. When you put your mind to it girls can do everything.
